3D Modeling Challenge - A Month-Long Team Competition

Love the realistic 3D models used for video games, movies, architecture, illustration, engineering, and commercial advertising? 

Want to explore animation or special effects?

Gather a team and join in the 3D Modeling Challenge. Throughout March, you and your teammates can create an image of your choice -- let your imagination lead you to create something to delight or inspire.

 

Contest rules

  • The contest is open to students of Columbia University and its affiliates. 
  • Entries must be submitted as a group project (3-5 members)
  • 3D models can be created using any program/language/software (eg Maya, Blender) but must be submitted in FBX format
  • Submissions will be judged on (85 points max to reach finals, 100 points max for finalists):
    • Accuracy, complexity, modeling ability (40 points)
    • Writeup / story (20 points)
    • Artistic expression & interpretation of landmark (20 points)
    • Number of schools represented (one point per school, maximum 5 points)
    • Audience vote (15 points)

 

Contest timeline

  • March 1-7: teams register, attend office hours for questions, review past training modules
  • March 8-28: contest open
    • Specific 3D modeling assignment to be shared with teams on March 8
    • Submissions must be made by 11:59 PM March 28 (EST)

 

Prizes, per team

  • 1st place - $1,000
  • 2nd place - $500
  • 3rd place - $250

You are in luck. Friday, March 5th at 8 AM (New York)  there will be a hands-on learning class with a new media artist named LaJune.

LaJuné is a New Media Artist, Maker, and Creative Technologist in New York. They are dedicated to making art abstracted from personal experiences and have created pieces that integrate performance, virtual reality, and physical computing to question the current use of technology and forms of communication. LaJuné's art is part of their "research centered around creating Technology and Mediums that are inherently intersectional allowing communities that have ignored to have a space to be recognized, loved, accepted and heard."

LaJuné has had opportunity to show and speak about their work at, Dance on Camera at Lincoln Center, MakerFaire, National Sawdust, Liberty Science Center, Chelsea Film Festival, Creative Tech Week and Weird Reality. They were also the Lead Character Animator for NeuroSpeculative Afrofeminism which premiered at Sundance Film Festival.
