The Microprocessor 2030 and Beyond

Arguably one of the most outstanding achievements in computing innovations, the microprocessor has enabled breakthroughs in every industry, and our digital lives are powered by it. Columbia University Emerging Technologies Consortium hosted industry leaders from AMD and HP to discuss the past, present, and future of the microprocessor on May 20, 2022. Joe Macri, Corporate VP and Product CTO of AMD Global, spoke on the processor design, research, and development, including history, current, and future iterations. Attendees engaged in a panel discussion on security, led by leadership from AMD and Tommy Gardner, Chief Technology Officer of HP Federal, on digital devices from processors to software.

Agenda Highlights Included:

  • Introduction from Columbia University Academic and Research, AVP, Maneesha Aggarwal and Columbia University Emerging Technologies, Director, Parixit Davé.
  • Presentation by Joe Macri, Corporate VP and Product CTO of AMD Global, on AMD R&D History; where it is now; where are the possibilities for the future.
  • Panel discussion with Joe Macri and Tommy Gardner, Chief Technology Officer of HP Federal, on security in PCs from processor to software
  • Closing remarks from Parixit Davé.

The closing remarks addressed the role of the microprocessor in higher education and the Metaverse. Industry leaders highlighted digital education growing role in higher education and the evolving ability to virtualize education to high-quality degree offerings and in-demand education. 

Columbia University Emerging Technologies Consortium facilitates multidisciplinary collaboration with faculty and researchers. The group aims to utilize next-generation technologies to broaden knowledge, increase interactivity in teaching methods, and improve student learning experiences. This spring event highlights successful partnerships between higher educational institutions and industry, bringing converging technologies to research labs and use cases across disciplines advancing pedagogy with the use of new technologies.
