3D Modeling Through Virtual Reality
Love the realistic 3D models used for video games, movies, architecture, illustration, engineering, and commercial advertising? Want to explore more about game design?
Gather a team of no more than 3 people or try on your own and join in the 3D Modeling Challenge for Virtual Reality. You and your teammates will be helping create a virtual Columbia Morningside Campus in 3D.
Contest rules:
- The contest is open to students of Columbia University and its affiliates.
- Register yourself (or your team) here Entry Form. Entries can be submitted either as a group or individual (3 teammates max)
- Indicate which building or area of CU Morningside you will be building
- 3D models can be created using any 3D modeling software (Maya, Blender, 3DS Max, Cinema 4D, etc)
- Engineers will be available to answer questions, assist as needed
- Loaner headsets are available if you need one to build
- Submissions must be submitted no later than 11:59 PM January 31st (EST)
- Submissions will be judged on:
- Quality (40 points)
- Creativity (20 points)
- Realism (20 points)
- How it looks in VR (20 points)
Support Documentation:
Please refer to the Unity documentation on how to export your model into Unity for testing your models. This will ensure that not only the model is imported, but also all of the textures and materials.
- Download Unity Hub and install the latest version of Unity. Make sure the version has LTS (Long Term Support) at the end.
Submission:
- Fill out your information via the link for Google Forms.
- Upload your model to the link that will be provided
- When adding your models, please add them to a folder. Add a text file to the folder providing your team name and the names of those on the team.
Prizes:
The winners of this contest, either individual or teams will receive an Oculus Quest VR headset. If your model is chosen as a winner it will also be added to the Virtual Columbia VR Experience. Winners will be notified via email.
